If you're not sure what the big deal is, the Apple iPhone is one of a new generation of cell phones called a smart phone. No longer just a communication device, these phones do it all, from doubling as mp3 players to letting you browse the Internet.

Apple made a splash with the hundreds of applications you can download to your phone, ranging from translating common phrases (in case you're in Hong Kong and can't figure out where the washroom is) to functioning as a carpenter's level to help you hang pictures. If the phrase 'there's an app for that' sounds familiar, you've seen the commercials.

Like all Mac products, the iPhone is a sleek looking, high functioning product. It tops everyone's list of their favorite smart phone in appearance, function, and ease of use... if not expense.

But most Mac products share another trait: high cost. The iPhone can run you up to $700 if you stroll into your local electronics store and buy it. Fortunately, there are easier (and far less expensive) ways to get your hands on it.

Most cellular phone companies have loyalty and contract programs where they give you significant discounts on phones if you sign a contract to stay with their services for a number of years. If you want to get someone an iPhone and you know they already have a contract, the best way to do it is to find out their phone number and talk to their service provider, who will be able to tell you how much an iPhone would cost them.

You can then get a gift certificate and tell them why you bought it. It's not quite as exciting as opening an iPhone on Christmas morning, but given a price difference of up to $500, it's worth the sacrifice.
