Looking For Some Great Back To School Gifts?
From Crayons To Cars: Great Back to School Gifts
It's time to get our back to school gifts in order! Most of us can remember when school shopping lists included basics like pens and paper. Now, as the requirements for each school year become increasingly technological, these lists include everything from pencils to computers; families often shower their students with both the necessities and a few additional gadgets to help make the upcoming school year more enjoyable.
Keeping Up With the Joneses
Students judge their social status by the level of gadgetry that they flaunt. Parents everywhere are familiar with this phenomenon, and since the advent of everything from graphing calculators to smart phones and even more pricey gadgets, making any attempt to satisfy this desire can quickly become expensive. Because of this, many parents choose to give their students one or two costly items as gifts, instead of making the entire wish list part of the back to school shopping expedition.
Are you ready to plunge into the realm of back to school gifts? Consider the age of your student first. Pre-teens and younger teenagers are just beginning to show an interest in gadgets, so simpler items like MP3 players and cell phones are both useful and socially prescribed.
Older teens may need anything from graphing calculators or PDAs to laptops and computer peripherals, and you may find yourself playing catch-up if you didn't give them an MP3 player or cell phone several years ago.
It Takes A Village
Once your student is off to college, you have reached an entirely new echelon of back to school gifts. Now, the items that used to be luxuries are considered necessities, and students want televisions, gaming consoles and even cars.
If you're overwhelmed, enlist close friends and family to give some of the less expensive items to college-bound kids, and encourage your student to use some of his or her graduation money to buy what they want while you focus on getting what they need.
Everything In Moderation
No matter how old your child is, don't let their wish list discourage or overwhelm you. Chances are, they only need the basics, including one or two gadgets (such as a calculator or computer) to complete their schoolwork; the rest of the items on the list would be nice to have but should not overshadow other needs.
The hype regarding increasingly expensive back to school gifts may be unavoidable, but you can and should set limits. Back to school gifts should be just that - gifts!
