How Big is Your Holiday Shopping Budget?
How to Stick to a Holiday Shopping Budget
It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of the holiday season and completely forget to stick within our holiday shopping budget. This has happened to me more than once, and I can almost hear the chorus of yeses from Cyberspace right now. If you’ve experienced difficulty sticking to a holiday shopping budget in the past, then we have just the tips for you.
Spouses and Kids
I don’t know about you, but I used to spend the most money on my spouse over anyone else on my Christmas list, then when the kids came along, I started spending the most on them. Aside from immediate family, it can get pretty tricky deciding on how much to spend.
Know the Rules
Keep in mind that most offices have policies on what an upper gift limit is for holiday gifts, so you’ll want to check into this before making any purchases. If you’re participating in a Secret Santa-type gift exchange, chances are your coworkers have also designated an upper gift limit. In this case, your decision is easy, and you should really stick within the agreed upon limit.
Some families are so big that they even do a designated gift swap within families. If you have lots of nieces and nephews, you might want to consider this. Essentially, every couple or aunt or uncle gets “assigned” one or two nieces or nephews to purchase for. This helps to eliminate buying gifts for ten or more nieces or nephews and can really help you stay within a more reasonable budget.
Remember the true reason for the season and don't get caught up and end up in debt. By watching your holiday shopping budget closely, you can enjoy the time of year without paying for it later.
