Easy Ways to Celebrate Different Holidays

Christmas and Halloween aren’t the Only Holidays

There are some upcoming holidays that are often overlooked when it comes to gift giving. President’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Memorial Day come to mind and all will be occurring in the first half of 2007. These holidays aren’t as widely celebrated as Christmas and Halloween, but they are holidays nonetheless, and giving out small gifts on these holidays can be both fun and easy.

It's a List -- Just Not Santa's

I’m a baker at heart, so after the New Year, just a week after all my Christmas baking, I sit down and get my list ready for the rest of winter and the spring season. I have a lineup of cakes that nicely showcase seasonal fruits and coincide with either holidays or upcoming functions.

Since I bake anyway, I try to align my baking with any holidays that are coming up. For President’s Day, I bake tasty cookies that I share with my friends and neighbors. I modify a Christmas recipe that I’ve already mastered-chocolate sandwich cookies. For Christmas, I tint the icing that goes in the center green and red. For President’s Day (and then later Memorial Day), I make the same cookie recipe but the filling is either red, white, or blue! For Valentine’s Day, I go back to red, and use green for St. Patrick’s Day. So the same recipe gets a lot of mileage.

Through the Stomach, to the Heart

If you enjoy spending time in the kitchen, turn your passion for baking into small presents for coworkers and family members for holidays throughout the year. You can easily decorate a cake for Valentine’s Day by placing conversation hearts around the outside to trim the edges or stick heart-shaped lollipops into the top for a unique topper. You can usually bake a cake for less than $5, but people really appreciate homemade baked goods.

Stamps that feature the American flag are a great choice for coworkers on holidays such as President’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, or Veteran’s Day.

Keep the less frequently celebrated holidays in mind this year and wow and surprise your friends and family with some of the above gift ideas.
