Christmas Comes Early for Nintendo DSi Fans
This will be a much-appreciated upgrade for users of the original DS and a great gift for DS newcomers.
It's not even close to Christmastime, but Nintendo has just released the latest version of its hugely popular Nintendo DS handheld gaming device, the DSi. It's a great gift for original DS fans, as well as newcomers to the DS.
The "i" stands for interactive
The DSi is much more interactive than either of its predecessors, and much more durable. It's no longer simply a gaming device: it now includes cameras, an Internet browser, touch technology, and a sound application. I like it for a number of reasons, but these are my top four:
1. The cameras
The two cameras on the DSi are a nice addition for hours of fun. Take a photo of yourself or your friends, and then use any of the eleven lenses to "play around" with the photo. Change colors, distort faces, add hearts, and merge two faces for loads of creative results. I had fun with the facial recognition technology. The onboard photo album stores the photos, and then simply set them to music for a whole new slide show. Also share photos from one DSi to another using the local wireless mode.
2. The sound
The DSi's sound application lets you record your own sounds and then run them through any of twelve filters to create an entirely new sound. Distort the songs in your playlist, filter out vocals, change pitch -- even play them backwards. Novice DJs will enjoy mixing and re-mixing their own take on popular music. Bonus: The DSi has a headphone outlet so closing the device and listening to music (AAC files only) on the go is a piece of cake.
3. The screens
The two screens on the Nintendo DSi are slightly larger and brighter than either the original DS or the DS Lite. Every little bit helps, especially when Nintendo kept the overall size of the device nearly the same.
4. The DSi shop
If you're familiar with the Wii Shopping Channel for the Wii, there is a similar online shop for the DSi. Download exclusive games and applications, and shop well-known titles too. Some are free, but many of these applications cost Nintendo points. Buy points with a credit card or purchase a Nintendo "points" card from a local retailer (another great gift idea).
With graduation season drawing near, the Nintendo DSi is a gift that's sure to please.
