Children's Books Make Fantastic Children's Gifts

Instead of a toy, give the gift of reading with children's books

The next time you have to buy a gift for a baby shower or young child's birthday, eschew the usual choice of clothing or toys and instead buy one or more of these favorite children's books.

Over the years my family has read many books, and some became family favorites. Those that weren't fun or engaging got cast aside, until we had some tried-and-true, much-loved and dog-eared books in our collection. These are the ones that captivate young minds, either because of word fun, rhythm, or pure imagination.

1. Chugga Chugga Choo Choo -- Kevin Lewis/Daniel Kirk

My two kids used to astound friends and family with this book. At the age of two, they were reciting large passages of this book aloud -- a great first step to actually reading the book. Its bright, bold colors, kid-friendly pictures, and engaging story made this a long-time favorite of both of theirs.

2. Barnyard Dance -- Sandra Boynton

The truth is, kids will love anything written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton. Because they're board books, these are appropriate for babies. Her adorable critter characters are the main attraction. Toddlers love hearing the silly stories over and over (and over... be forewarned). Barnyard Dance is a favorite frolicking bedtime song and dance in our house.

3. The Monster at the End of This Book -- Jon Stone/Michael Smollin

Two generations of fans of this book reside in my house. This is one of my husband's childhood favorites. Remember when Grover was the star of Sesame Street? This story is great gets your kids on the edge of their seat in anticipation of the monster on the last page. And it teaches them that monsters can be lovable and fun, and not scary at all.

4. How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food? -- Jane Yolen/Mark Teague

This fun book teaches table manners in an offbeat, hysterical way, and your kids get the point. Pay careful attention to the detail on the page, including the parents and the pets. Well written and wonderfully illustrated.

5. Anything by Dr. Seuss

It's true - each one of Dr. Seuss's books is better than the one before. They hold their popularity. Over fifty years is a testament to the imagination and appeal of Dr. Seuss. Children love the more-recent "Seuss-like" books that are a part of The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. Titles such as "Is a Camel a Mammal?" and "On Beyond Bugs: All About Insects" showcase beloved Seuss characters teaching subjects in the fun, silly, rhyming format we all adore.

These are all great titles to give as gifts, depending on the age of the child. Unlike clothes, which are quickly outgrown, and toys, which are easily broken and easily forgotten, children's books are a gift to treasure.
